The 4am pick up to catch our train to Delhi that arrived 2 hours late, traffic congestion like no other and surly staff at our hotel in Delhi dampened our moods, which were raised again after “happy hour” on the roof top terrace followed by tasty food and sleep until 8am!
Next day our tour of Delhi started with the Mosque – a vast, open courtyard enclosed by mellow walls. Then a tour of Delhi’s markets, which throbbed with cars, bikes, people, dogs and even a monkey or two. Leaving the market area by rickshaw we swerved and bumped perilously through the rough, busy streets. Yet again our senses were assaulted by the smells, noises and sights of a city that is so removed from anything we’ve seen before.
In contrast the the quiet, peace of the Gandhi memorial and Humayun’s Tomb (thought to be the predecessor of the Taj Mahal were an absolute surprise/delight to us – so close to the incessant noise of the city.
So Delhi was a surprise! And a pleasant one too.
